In this KB, we will share step-by-step instructions on how to reinstall macOS after data erasure on Mac machines, primarily with M1, M2 chips, etc.
Erasing MacBook data using BitRaser Drive Eraser software is crucial for organizations to safeguard against data privacy invasion and meet compliance requirements like GDPR, HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, etc. The data erasure process is most relevant when organizations need to dispose of or repurpose devices. To ensure no data is left behind on the machine, IT administrators and service providers performing Mac erasure sanitize the complete drive, including the Operating System (OS).
After successfully wiping your Mac device with BitRaser Drive Eraser for Mac, knowing how to reinstall macOS is crucial for reusing the Mac machine again. This article lists simple steps to help you reinstall macOS.
How to Reinstall macOS?
For this KB, we erased a MacBook Air with an M1 chip. To know how to use BitRaser Drive Eraser software for wiping MacBook Air (MBA) with an M1 chip, you can refer to the KB article, How can I Wipe a Mac with M1 Chip?
Once you complete the wiping process, you can shut down your device and reinstall macOS on your MBA.
Step 1: Power ON your Mac machine. You will see the Mac ‘Reinstallation’ screen; click the ‘Recovery’ button. (Refer to Image 1)

Step 2: Select ‘Disk Utility’ from the Mac ‘Recovery’ screen and click ‘Continue’. (Refer to Image 2)

Step 3: On the 'Disk Utility' screen, go to the 'View' menu and select the first option, 'Show Only Volumes'. (Refer to Image 3)

Step 4: Select the ‘disk0s2’ volume in the left pane and click the ‘Erase’ button on the right side. (Refer to Image 4)

Step 5: A new ‘Erase’ window will open. Enter the volume name in the text field, select the format as 'APFS', and click the ‘Erase’ button. We have named it ‘M1 Mac’. (Refer to Image 5)

Step 6: Exit Disk Utility from the menu bar after erasing the disk. (Refer to Image 6)

Step 7: Now, select ‘Reinstall macOS Sonoma’ and click ‘Continue’. (Refer to Image 7)

Step 8: In the new window, click the ‘Continue’ button, then in the new window click the ‘Agree’ button. (Refer to Image 8)

Step 9: Select the volume where you want to install macOS and click ‘Continue’. (Refer to Image 9)

Step 10: You will see a new screen that prompts you to erase your Mac; proceed to erase it by clicking on the ‘Erase Mac' button. (Refer to Image 10)

Step 12: Click the ‘Erase Mac’ button in the Erase Mac window. (Refer to Image 12)

Step 13: After erasing the system, the system restarts automatically and goes to the Recovery screen. You will see the ‘Activate Mac’ screen; connect the system to the internet, and you will see the message “Your Mac is activated.” Now click on ‘Exit to Recovery’. (Refer to Image 13)

Step 14: Select ‘Reinstall macOS Sonoma’ and click ‘Continue’. Once again, click ‘Continue’ and the ‘Agree’ button. Select the volume where you want to install macOS and click ‘Continue’.
The installation process will begin.
This is a time-consuming process and can take a few hours, depending on your internet speed. (Refer to Image 14)
Note: Connect your device to a Power Source before reinstalling macOS.
